I read about this today, and I’m really confused.
Yes … freegans. Vegans who embrace free stuff. They basically provide for their needs by squatting and eating out of Dumpsters in a “damn the man and consumerism” kind of way.
But here’s where I get confused … is “freegan” now just an urban chic term for “bum”?
From their site:
Freeganism is a total boycott of an economic system where the profit motive has eclipsed ethical considerations and where massively complex systems of productions ensure that all the products we buy will have detrimental impacts most of which we may never even consider. Thus, instead of avoiding the purchase of products from one bad company only to support another, we avoid buying anything to the greatest degree we are able.
… Buying stuff is NOT OK, but using your MacBook at the Apple store in midtown to build a Web site is?
I’m confused. It wouldn’t be the first time, but this really does stump me. In what world would someone wake up and decide, “You know, Wal-Mart’s just really evil, so I’m going to live in dilapidated buildings and eat food out of restaurant Dumpsters.”?
I’m all for being socially responsible and all, but … wow. Maybe I like things like showers and hot food and my washer and dryer too much to really get it.
